Reflective Journal - Cut&Paste

I have the tutorial today and i get to know the problem in my sketchbook is that i haven't connect the things that i have drawn in sketchbook. So i alter my drawing by using some cut-outs to make them have connections with Matisse's works.I chose the bright green and black to do flock because Matisse has used these colours in his works. The combination of these two colours is very attractive.I think it might hurt my eyes if i look at it for a long time.So i did a collage that a hand with green and black flock is poking an eye and the eye is dropping tears because it is pretty hurts.

I chose the 'blue nude' drawn by Matisse as my character in this project. But I change it into a nude with a broken leg so that it can be linked with hurts.I have try to use the heat-transfer paper and ink to do some collage on different fabrics. The colours on leather are brighter and clearer than on calico.I combined the blue nude with big green block which is the idea i have done in my previous work. The colours show good contrast. Then I started to do some sketches based on my collages and to create a story for my character.I want to show the blue nude is a confident and cheerful girl.Although she is a disability, she doesn't feel scare to let the others see her body.

I uesd two different kind of thread to the embroider. It can show patterns on fabric(calico) but it take a long time to do.So I try to combine the embroidery and ink on the same fabric(like silk) .Firstly,I used the green ink to paint on the fabric and put it into the heat-press machine.I didn't put the fabric flat in the machine so that it can have some texture. Then I used blue thread to do embroidery on the fabric which has green ink on it.In this way,the pattern can't show clearly and the green ink and blue thread can't show a good effect on this kind of fabric. So I will try it on another kind of fabric.

The character(the broken leg girl) is a optimistic and lively girl who smile everyday. So I want to make her costume to be energetic and playful.I chose the green and blue to show her energetic because i think the bright colours are young.I chose the fabric like the yarn but very thick and tough which can create the shape. This fabric can make the costume to be brisk so that it can show the personality about lively.

Cut and Paste reflection

What was the inspiration for your cut and paste project?

Matisse work and my sketch which I drew in Tate Modern.

What artists have inspired your piece?

Matisse.

What materials/techniques did you use and why?

I have used heat-transfer paper, flock and ink.Because I can create the shape into whatever I want and overlap the colours to make different effect.I have also used the embroidery, because it can make the fabric have texture.

What worked well and why?

I think I did embroidery well.Because I have tried it on different kinds of fabric and picked the one shows the best effect.I have also tried hand embroidery to compare with the embroidery by using machine.

What didn't work and why?

The heat-transfer paper didn't work because it can only show very light colours on the fabric which I have chose to do my final piece.I used ink to replace it.

If you were to repeat this project how would you do it differently?

I will do more research for reference and get more idea. And also develop my idea into more depth by trying different materials and techniques.
